The Ultimate HD Camcorder?
.
Perhaps the ultimate HD camcorder would be one of the professional Sony HDCAM or HD CineAlta series. These are the HD equivalent to Digital Betacam, are very expensive, and require a higher-end editing system such as Avid. Apple editing software and Firewire can't handle the higher bit rate usually transferred over HD SDI (can be as much as 880 Mbps). These cameras have 3 - 2/3" 16:9 CCDs and provide 10-bit 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 (RGB) color sampling. These pro-level workhorse cameras are difficult to beat in regard to image quality and reliability.
OK, that's too expensive for me. What's the ultimate prosumer camcorder - a camcorder that costs less, produces high quality HD video, and can be edited using Apple's Final Cut Studio?
The Panasonic AG-HVX200 has slots for two P2 cards. At full HD (1080) 100 Mbps will take 1 GB of space per minute. The largest capacity P2 card holds 32 GB and costs around $1500 each. The P2 cards can be hot-swapped so while recording to one card (32 minutes per card) you can be swapping in more cards. When downloading the data from a second card to a laptop you can record video for a virtually unlimited length of time. Of course, if you can't be bothered with hot-swapping cards while shooting video, your maximum capacity will be about an hour of video at full quality.
An alternative to the P2 cards is the Focus Enhancements FireStore accessory external hard drive that can be connected to the camcorder. The FireStore costs about the same as one 32 GB P2 card and holds 160 GB or two and a half hours at full quality HD. When considering the cost, the FireStore might be an excellent alternative to purchasing multiple P2 cards.
An interesting accessory that can be used with the Panasonic AG-HVX200 is the Redrock Micro M2 cinema lens adapter that allows greater depth-of-field and focus control for film-like qualities. You can use Zeiss, Nikon or Canon prime lenses with the adapter. The M2 mounts onto the front of the camera as shown in the picture below.
Take a look at the sample video below that demonstrates the Panasonic AG-HVX200 camera combined with the Redrock M2.
The Panasonic AG-HVX200 might not be the ultimate, but it's not bad for the price. See the following specs.
> 3 - 1/3" 16:9 960x540 CCDs
> DVCPRO HD format - 100 Mbps at 1080/60i; 6.7 to 1 compression
> 1080p at 24 and 30 fps
> 4:2:2 color sampling (at 100Mbps)
> Records to hot swap P2 cards or 160 GB ext hard drive at full 100 Mbps
> Records to mini-DV tape at a reduced 24 Mbps
These are fairly impressive specs considering the cost is closer to that of a consumer camera.
